AUBURN, Ala. -
The Auburn women’s tennis team picked up eight wins at the June Stewart Invitational in its final action of the fall before Andie Dikosavljevic travels to Flushing Meadows, N.Y., for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships Nov. 12-15.
“This was a good weekend for our girls,” assistant coach Chris Hooshyar said. “It was good for them to play against some quality opponents, including the reigning NCAA Champions. They were able to see what it takes to play at an elite level while also continuing to work on improving their strengths and weaknesses.”
Auburn got started on day one with four wins. Alannah Griffin stayed hot with a win over Sarah Baron from Indiana (6-7, 6-1, 6-3). She was followed by Reka Muller with a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 win over Indiana’s Madison Appel. Caroline Turner dropped a tough match to Tanaporn Thongsing from Wichita State 6-4, 7-5.
Muller and Michaud got doubles started on day one with a 6-4 win over Tanaporn Thongsing and Giulia Guidetti from Wichita State. Griffin and Turner beat WSU’s Luca Pump and Abby Stevens.
On day two, Auburn faced off against reigning national champion Vanderbilt in singles. Turner was the lone winner with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Maggie Leavell. Muller fell to No. 14 Astra Sharma 7-6, 6-4, and Griffin dropped a heartbreaker to Fernanda Contreras 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
In doubles against Indiana, Michaud and Muller fell to Kim Schmider and Sarah Baron 6-3. Griffin and Turner lost to Paula Gutierrez and Danielle Wolf 6-4.
Day three concluded the tournament and Auburn picked up three big wins. In singles against Wichita State, Muller got the morning started with a 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 win over No. 125 Gabriella Porubin. Griffin beat Luca Pump 4-6, 7-6, 10-3 and Turner fell in a tough match 6-7, 6-4, 10-6.
In doubles Auburn finished the tournament with two games against Vanderbilt. Freshman duo Griffin and Turner beat Magie Leavell and Payton Robinette 6-0. Muller and Michaud fell to Astra Sharma and Fernanda Contreras 6-2.
