Auburn Continues Play At ITA Southern Regional Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Auburn women's tennis team continued play at the ITA Southern Regional over the weekend in the quarterfinal rounds at the Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavilion.

In doubles action, Auburn duo Emily Newton and Maria Arechavaleta defeated LSU's Kaitlin Burns and Yevette Vlaar 8-4 before falling in a hard fought quarterfinal match to the number one pair from Alabama, Courtney McLane and Alexa Guarachi 8-4

Also in doubles play Saturday, Taylor Schreimann and Plamena Kurteva fell to Alabama's Alex Clay and Taylor Lindsey, 8-3, in the second round.

After starting the tournament strong in singles completion Friday Auburn's young squad ran into stiffer competition.

Freshmen Newton,Arechavaleta and Olivia Bennett fell in their matches Saturday. Newton loss to the top seeded Kristi Boxx of Ole Miss, 6-3, 6-1. Arechvaleta took on the six seed Mariam Kurdadze falling in a hard fought match 7-6, 6-2. Sophomore Kurteva took on the three seeded Connor Vogol of Ole Miss getting edged out 6-0, 6-4. Finishing the day out for the Tigers, Bennett matched up against LSU's Keri Frankenberger in a three set battle, falling 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

Freshman Jackie Kasler competed in the main draw consolation flight defeating three opponents to advance to Monday's championship match against Tiffany Welcher of Alabama.
