ATHENS, Ga. - Alex Haney and Melissa Koning both advanced into Sunday's Round of 16 by winning a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon at the ITA Southern Regional Women's Tennis Championships at the Dan McGill Tennis Complex at the University of Georgia.
Haney, seeded 9-16 in the tournament, stormed to two early victories in the "A" Singles Upper Half, knocking off Jacksonville's Juliama Umeki, 6-1, 6-0, and then taking down Eva Sambrano of Florida Gulf Coast by the same score of 6-1, 6-0. She will return to the court on Sunday to face Georgia Tech's Christy Striplin, who is seeded seventh in the tournament.
Koning wasted few points in getting past Tatiana Soldatova of Jacksonville, 6-3, 6-0, in the opening round of the "A" Sinlges Lower Half but then had to go the distance to down Ole Miss' Kristi Boxx, seeded fourth in the tournament, winning, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. She will face Florida's Megan Alexander, another 9-16 seed, on Sunday.
Dunja Djuranovic fell to Troy's Leonie Guijt, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round of the Upper Half while Whitney Chappell was downed by Alabama's Courtney McLane, 7-5, 6-2, in the Lower Half first round. Daniela Vuckadinovic also fell in her first singles match, losing to Ali Beavers of Georgia Southern, 6-2, 6-1, in the "B" Singles.
