Auburn's doubles team of Alex Haney and Melissa Koning advanced to the quarterfinals of the "A" Doubles - Lower Half on Friday afternoon but fell to Ole Miss' Kristi Boxx and Karen Nijssen, 8-3, as action kicked off at the 2008 ITA Southern Regional Women's Tennis Championships at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
With competition moved indoors due to poor weather conditions, only doubles was contested on Friday and play was moved indoors to the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts.
Haney and Koning, the No. 4 doubles team in the nation and the second seed in the draw, won a first round match over Georgia Tech's Lynn Blau and Hillary Davis, 8-1, and then rolled past Kenza Belbacha and Christy Core of Central Florida by the same count before falling to the Ole Miss duo, which was seeded in the 5-8 range.
In the upper half of the draw, Auburn's Whitney Chappell and Fani Chifchieva downed Troy's Annabelle Bares and Rawia El Sisi, 8-4, but fell to Miami's Bianca Eichkorn and Michaela Kissel, another 5-8 seed, by an 8-3 count in the Round of 16.
Due to the rain, singles play will begin at 9am ET on Saturday and the first two rounds will be played throughout the day. Quarterfinal and semifinal action will then be held on Sunday with the championships matches taking place on Monday.
In singles play, Auburn's Dunja Djuranovic will face Troy's Leonie Guijt while Haney, ranked 9-16, will face Jacksonville's Juliana Umeki in the "A" upper half. In the lower half, Koning will face Jacksonville's Tatiana Soldatova and Chappell will face Florida State's Jessica Wente. Daniela Vuckadinovic will face Georgia Southern's Ali Beavers in the "B" Singles.
