Women's Tennis Wraps Up Final Day at ITA/USTA Regionals
Oct. 22, 2012
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Sophomore Emily Flickinger and freshman Pleun Burgmans scored a big win over an LSU duo in the consolation doubles final, but Jackie Kasler and Jen Pfeifler came up short in the main draw championship on the final day of action at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional hosted by the University of Alabama.
“Jackie and Jen played well and had a great tournament,” Auburn women’s tennis head coach Lauren Longbotham Meisner said. “I’m really proud of how they played. Pleun and Emily played great also. They came out hot from beginning. Ashley started strong, but ran into a battle-tested senior. The goal at this tournament is to make it to Monday and we did that. This was a very positive weekend for a very young team. Because we are so young, we will go through some growing pains, but overall this was a positive experience.”
Auburn went 1-2 in early morning action on Monday at the Alabama Tennis Center with Flickinger and Burgmans defeating LSU’s Kaitlin Burns and Ariel Morton 8-5 to earn the title in the main doubles consolation bracket as they picked up the lone victory of the day for the Tigers.
The second-seeded team of Kasler and Pfeifler squared off with Alabama’s No. 1 Alexa Guarachi and Mary Anne Macfarlane in a battle of the two top seeds in the bracket, the winner of the match advancing to New York in November for the 2012 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y.
Despite a strong effort, Kasler and Pfeifler were denied their fifth victory in four days and came up short 8-4 to the Alabama tandem.
Auburn’s lone singles match of the final day of competition featured freshman Ashley Kitchen battling for the title in the singles consolation bracket. After winning the first set 6-1, the native South Carolinian dropped the next set 0-6 and fell 10-4 in the determining set to Emma Levy (Tulane).
The Tigers are in action next on November 2-3 at the Houston Fall Draw when they wrap up competition until January. For the latest on Auburn women’s tennis follow @AUWomensTennis on Twitter and become a fan on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/AUWomensTennis.
