AUBURN, Ala. – A day after picking up her first win over a ranked opponent, freshman Georgie Axon defeated No. 33 Andie Daniell (Alabama), 7-5, 6-4, as four Auburn players advance to the USTA/ITA Southern Regional quarterfinals.
“We had a disappointing showing this morning in doubles, but we rebounded in singles to take four of six matches this afternoon,” Auburn head coach Lauren Spencer said. “We challenged our girls after doubles to step up, play our tennis and rebound in singles. All six girls played gritty, tough tennis and I was proud by how we competed to come away with four wins. We look forward to moving on to Sunday’s match play.”
An England native, Axon picked up her fifth win of the fall season with her win over Daniell and will face off against teammate, No. 25 Allie Michaud. Michaud defeated Mississippi State’s Lisa Marie, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, to clinch her spot in the Regional quarterfinal.
Junior Andie Dikosavljevic defeated Zalina Khairudinova of Ole Miss, 6-1, 6-2 and will advance to the main draw quarterfinals against Stefana Andrei (ULM).
Sophomore Caroline Turner advanced to the consolation quarterfinal with her second victory of the tournament, defeating Tzu-Hui Chen (Southern Miss), 6-2, 6-3. Turner will face off against Skylar Holloway (LSU) tomorrow.
After falling to the consolation bracket Dikosavljevic and Taylor Russo defeated Polina Ivanova and Vladislava Litvanova (NW State), 8-3 to advance to the doubles consolation quarterfinals against Jazmin Brittos and Marta Sramkova (La. Tech) tomorrow. They will be joined by Michaud and Alannah Griffin, who will face LSU’s Ryann Foster and Skylar Holloway.
Doubles play will get started tomorrow at 9 a.m. and will be followed by singles at 11 a.m.
