MIAMI, Fla. – The Auburn University women’s tennis team posted 10 combined wins at the Miami Fall Invite over the weekend, the team’s third tournament of the fall season. Sophomore Michala Kucharova, junior Jen Pfeifler, freshman Reka Muller and senior Jackie Kasler all competed in singles and doubles at the tournament with the doubles team of Kucharova and Muller taking the high honors for Auburn as the third-place team in the Green doubles bracket.

“This was a fun tournament for our girls this weekend,” Auburn head coach Lauren Longbotham Meisner said. “With the ITA Southern Regionals coming up, this was a great precursor to that big tournament and I think we accomplished what we needed to accomplish here to get reach for that next tournament.”

Kucharova and Muller, who were both coming off strong outings at the ITA All-American and Razorback Classic, respectively, scored a doubles win right off the bat in the Green bracket to reach the semi-finals, defeating Andjela Djokovic and Natalia Davila of Purdue, 8-3, their first win together this season. Unfortunately, a semi-final loss sent them to the third-place match against SEC foes, Allie Robbins/Mai El Kamash of Ole Miss. The tandem ended the tournament on a high note with an 8-1 victory to go 2-1 for the tournament.

In their second tournament of the fall, 23rd-ranked doubles team of Kasler and Pfeifler notched their first win of the 2013-14 season topping Mara Schmidt and Krisztina Kapitany of Purdue, 8-6, in the Orange doubles bracket’s consolation third-place match.

Coming off a singles flight win at the Razorback Classic last week, Muller was looking to carry over the momentum this weekend in South Beach. The freshman advanced to the quarterfinals of in the Green bracket after defeating Miami’s Deborah Suarez, 6-3, 6-2, but was sent to the consolation after second-round loss. Muller did win one more match in the tournament, defeating Akemi Maehama of Barry University in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, for her fifth win of the fall.

For Kucharova, she had a tall task in the first round of the Orange singles bracket, facing No. 39 Caroline Rohde Moe of Ole Miss. The sophomore couldn’t get her second ranked win of her career, but did win her next match in the consolation bracket over Lynda Xepoleas of Purdue in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, for her second singles win of the fall.

Playing in her first singles competition of the fall, Pfeifler was looking to get the year off on the right foot and went 2-2 in the tournament’s Orange bracket. Pfeifler dropped her first round match, but bounced back nicely with two-straight wins to advance to the consolation singles finals. Kasler defeated Nicole Robinson of Purdue and Ole Miss’ Erin Stephens to reach the final match and score her first two wins of the season.

The final singles competitor, Kasler matched her teammates with two individual wins in the three-day tournament. After advancing to the quarterfinals of the Green bracket with a win over Barry Univesity’s Maria Reis, 6-1, 6-4, Kasler was sent to the consolation side after suffering her first singles loss of the young season. The Florida-native ended the weekend on solid note with a win in the consolation’s seventh-place match over Akemi Maehama of Barry, 6-3, 6-1.

Auburn will be right back on the courts next week when they begin play in the ITA Southern Regionals as host school at the Yarbrough Tennis Center in Auburn, Ala. Play for singles and doubles will begin on Friday Oct. 18 and run through Monday Oct. 21 until a singles and doubles champion is crowned. The winners will advance to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in New York City.
