PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Ninth-ranked Fani Chifchieva advanced to the semifinals of the Rivera/ITA Women's All-American Championships Friday with pair of wins, including a thrilling victory over Clemson's No. 2 Ana Mijackika, at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Chifchieva began the day by rallying from a first set loss to down No.
72 Laura Gioia of Furman, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(2) in the second round. In the quarterfinals, taking on the second-ranked player in the nation, Mijacika, Chifchieva again rebounded from a first-set loss to get the 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(3) win.
Saturday's semifinals pits Chifchieva against California's sevent-ranked Marina Cossou at noon. In the top half of the bracket, Arizona State's No. 20 Kelcy McKenna will face No. 34 Maria Mosolova of Northwestern. Winners advance to Sunday's finals.
In doubles action, Auburn's fourth-ranked duo of Alex Haney and Melissa Koning bowed out of the tournament on an 8-1 loss at the hands of No. 15 Laura Vallverdu and Michaela Kissell of Miami (Fla.).
