PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The Auburn women’s tennis duo of Pleun Burgmans and Emily Flickinger upset the nation’s third-ranked doubles pair of Monique Albuquerque and Clementia Riobuena from Miami, 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (12-10), on Friday to advance to the semifinals at the Rivera/ITA All-American Championships.
Auburn’s sixth-ranked pair battled back from dropping the opening set and rallied to claim the win the quarterfinal match. The victroy marked the second win for Burgmans/Flickinger against a top-5 opponent in the last calendar year. The tandem defeated then third-ranked Hayley Carter and Jamie Loeb, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 at the 2014 NCAA Championships in May.
“We’re proud of the win by Pleun and Emily,” head coach Lauren Longbotham Meisner said. “They’ve worked hard in practice throughout the fall and they continued to battle tonight against a very good team after dropping the first set. I’m very proud of their effort and glad to see them advance.”
After dropping the first set, Burgmans/Flickinger cruised in the second set to force a deciding tiebreaker. The pair won the marathon tiebreaker, 12-10 to earn their semifinal berth at the prestigious fall tournament.
Burgmans/Flickinger will face Clemson’s No. 7 duo of Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Romples in the semifinals on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CT.
