PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Auburn's doubles team of Alex Haney and Melissa Koning and singles player Fani Chifchieva all won their first-round matches in main draw play at the Rivera/ITA Women's All-American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., on Thursday.
"Today was a good day for the Tigers," head coach Tim Gray said. "Alex and Mel played, very, very solid. I was extremely happy with their focus and energy. Fani started a little flat, but she stuck with her game plan and raised her level and beat a really good player in Anastasia Petukhova. She managed the momentum very well."
The Tigers' fourth-ranked duo of Haney and Koning defeated No. 9 Anna Sydorska and Macall Harkins of TCU, 8-5, in the first round. Haney and Koning will face No. 15 Laura Vallverdu and Michael Kissell of Miami (Fla.) in quarterfinal action at 11 a.m. Friday.
Auburn's ninth-ranked Fani Chifchieva opened with a 1-6, 7-6(3), 6-3, win over No. 16 Anastasia Petukhova of Fresno State in the singles main draw. Chifchieva will square off against No. 72 Laura Gioia of Furman at 1 p.m. Friday. Gioia upended Southern California's fifth-ranked Amanda Fink, 7-5 6-4.
