AUBURN, Ala. - Allie Michaud claimed the singles title of the Flight 1A bracket at the Rice Invite on Sunday, defeating teammate Taylor Russo in the finals, 6-1, 6-1. Auburn women's tennis picked up 11 victories in the tournament.

"I think this was a good starting point for us to see where we are and evaluate what areas we need to work on going into our season," head coach Lauren Spencer said. "This tournament provided great opportunities for us to play teams we don't normally see throughout the year and get some quality matches. This was a good starting point that we want to continue to build on throughout the fall season and into the spring."

Michaud got things going on Friday, with a win over No. 120 Julia O'Loughlin of Denver, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2. She advanced to the finals with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 58 Wendy Zang (Rice).

Russo also posted two wins over ranked opponents, defeating Texas' No. 82 Neda Koprcina, 6-4, 7-5 on Friday and then advancing to the finals with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 over Rice's No. 28 Katherine Ip.

Sophomore Caroline Turner finished third in the Flight 2B bracket after a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Alex Kitchen of Southern Miss in the main draw consolation match. Turner defeated Denver's Gracia Mboko, 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the main draw semifinals before falling 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to Alison Ho of Rice.

Turner and freshman Georgie Axon fell in the finals of the Flight 1A doubles main draw, losing to Dominika Bashota and Olaya Garrido Rivas of TCU. The duo defeated Julia O'Loughlin and Maureen Slattery of Denver, 6-1 on Friday and then turned around to defeat Rice's No. 28 Lindsey Hodge and Wendy Zhang 6-3.

Axon defeated Giovanna Fioretti of McNeese State, 6-4, 6-1 to take third in the Flight 1B consolation bracket, while No. 27 Russo and Michaud won third in the Flight 1A consolation bracket, defeating Texas State's Eva Dench and Pippa Carr, 6-0.
