CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Auburn women’s tennis team combined to earn 18 wins at the Miami Fall Invite at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center to begin the 2014-15 season.

The Tigers had to battle the rain throughout the three-day tournament, causing the tournament to not fully be completed. Most of Friday afternoon and Saturday’s schedule had to postpone due to heavy rains. Singles play in both the orange and green draws ended after the semifinal round.

Auburn got strong play from doubles pair of Reka Muller and Jen Pfeifler, who won the green doubles bracket by defeating Miami’s Wendy Zhang and Sinead Lohan, 8-6 on Sunday. The tandem finished 3-0 on the weekend to lead the way for the Tigers.

Auburn’s sixth-ranked doubles team of Pleun Burgmans and Emily Flickinger advanced to the semifinals of the orange doubles flight, falling to eventual tournament champions, Stephanie Wagner and Lina Likeikite of Miami, 8-5. The duo would finish third in the orange doubles draw, downing teammates Michala Kucharova and Paula de Man in the consolation match, 8-5.

Kucharova and de Man also competed in the orange flight for doubles, opening play with a 8-5 win over over USF’s Vero Bessonova and Jessica Cortez. The duo battled tough with Miami’s third-ranked pair of Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno, but ultimately fell 8-5 in the semifinal round.

In singles, No. 36 Burgmans advanced to the semifinals in orange flight, opening the tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over USF’s Jessica Cortez. The junior earned her second win of the weekend, battling back to win in three sets, 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-3 over Miami’s Lohan.

No. 94 Flickinger took fifth place in the orange draw, defeating Pitt’s Amber Washington 6-3, 6-2 in her final match at the tournament Sunday. The senior began singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Pitt’s Callie Frey on Friday.

de Man finished 2-1 and started off on the right foot with a three-set win over USF’s Bessonova in the Round of 16. After falling to Miami’s 18th-ranked Stephanie Wagner in the quarterfinals, de Man rebounded with a 6-1, 7-5 over Pitt’s Frey Sunday.

In the green draw, Pfeifler advanced all the way to the semifinals with two victories before falling to Miami’s Wendy Zhang, 6-1, 6-0. In the Round of the 16, the senior posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Pitt’s Katherine Castro. Pfeifler collected her second win of the weekend in the quarterfinals, battling back in three sets to down Baylor’s Eliza Long 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Freshman Andie Dikosavlijevic and Mary Katherine Lewis each earned a win in singles, apiece, respectively for the Tigers in the green singles flight.

Up next for the Tigers is the Rivera/ITA-All-America in Pacific, Palisades, Calif., Sept. 27 through Oct. 5. Burgmans will represent the Tigers in the singles draw for the second straight year and the junior will team up with Flickinger in doubles at the prestigious fall tournament.
