LONG ISLAND, N.Y. - The Auburn women's tennis team posted nine wins in singles play during the second day of action at the Stony Brook Classic. The Nos. 1-6 players all competed against Stony Brook and Nos. 4-6 took on Army.
"We had another solid day today," head coach Tim Gray said. "Our focus was excellent and we looked very sharp for our first tournament of the fall."
Junior All-American Fani Chifchieva recorded a 6-1, 7-5 win over Katherin Hanson in the No. 1 spot for the Tigers. All-American Alex Haney won by default in No. 2 singles after taking a 4-1 lead in the first set against Gayatri Krishnan.
All-American Melissa Koning defeated Salome Mkervalidze 6-1, 6-2 and Whitney Chappell knocked off Erica Federgreen 6-1, 6-1, in the Nos. 3 and 4 spots, respectively. Playing in the No. 5 spot for the Tigers, Dunja Djuranovic defeated Fanny Charliquart 6-1, 6-3.
In her first singles action as a Tiger, freshman Daniela Vuckadinovic notched a 6-3, 6-3 win over Anna Pieschl.
Against Army, Chappell blanked Patty Vollmer 6-0, 6-0, playing in the No. 4 spot. Vuckadinovic scored a 6-3, 6-3, victory over Jurelle Mendoza and Heather Bybee notched a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Robie Verano in the Nos. 5 and 6 spots, respectively.
