LONG ISLAND, N.Y. - The Auburn women's tennis team opened the fall season Friday at the Stony Brook Classic by winning 11 doubles matches.
"Today was a good day for us," head coach Tim Gray said. "For our first tournament, our focus was good. Everyone did a good job and it was a team effort. It's an early tournament and we're able to get some confidence."
In the No. 1 spot, All-Americans Alex Haney and Melissa Koning won all four of their matches on the afternoon. The duo blanked two opponents 8-0, Annie Houg and Sarah Giles-m of Army and Long Island University's Lilians Cortes and H'Ann Johnson. Haney and Koning notched 8-1 wins over Stony Brook's Erica Federgreen and Anna Pieschl and Elja van Berlo and Zoe Lee of Southern Miss.
Fani Chifchieva and Whitney Chappell, playing in the No. 2 spot, picked up four wins on the day. Chifchieva and Chappell picked up a pair of 8-1 victories over Army's Michael Tollerton and Patty Vollmer and LIU's duo of Dara Lahens and Selma Babic. The Tiger's defeated Southern Miss' Lauren Gutterman and Hollie Robinson 8-2 and recorded an 8-5 win over Stony Brook's Katherine Hanson and Gayatri Krishan.
The third pair in action, Dunja Djuranovic and Daniella Vukadinovic, played in the No. 3 spot and posted a 3-1 record. The pair defeated Robie Verano and Jurelle Mendoza of Army and Amy Hosotujl and Stephanie Eli of LIU, winning each 8-2, and notched an 8-3 win over Fanny Charliquart and Salome Mkervalidze. Auburn's only loss of the day came to Southern Miss' Alexandra Kaluza and Shannon Rogers, dropping the match 8-2.
Play resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. ET with the Auburn singles set to square off against Toledo.
