AUBURN, Ala. -- The Auburn women's tennis team opened its 2010 fall season Friday at the SEC Fall Coaches' Classic. The early season tournament, which is being held at the Yarborough Tennis Center in Auburn, Ala., completed 84 total matches in its opening day. All 12 SEC schools competed in singles and doubles matches.
"It was a good first day," head coach Tim Gray said. "We had a lot of bright spots, and I saw a lot of good things today."
In the singles matches sophomores Paulina Schippers and Plamena Kurteva started the tournament off with individual wins. Schippers defeated Kentucky's Caitlin McGraw in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. In straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, Kurteva downed Kentucky's Elle Coldrion. Schippers and Kurteva are both set to face an Arkansas Razaorback in the next round of singles play.
"I'm very pleased with a lot of things I saw today," Gray added. "The fall is an opportunity for us to get a chance to compete and see where we are. We had a lot of girls work really hard over the summer, so it was good to see where they were."
Caroline Thornton and Maria Arechavaleta teamed up to defeat Ole Miss' Laura van de Stroet and Vivian Vlaar 8-5. Also in dodubles Taylor Schreimann and Kurteva defeated Emily Carbone and Stephanie Roy 9-8.
Action at the SEC Fall Classic continues Saturday at 10 a.m. beginning with doubles play at the Yarborough Tennis Center.
