Tulsa, Okla. - Auburn sophomore Fani Chifchieva earned her fourth win in the NCAA Individual Singles Championship Saturday at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center. She moves up into the semifinal round of match play.
"Fani did a great job dealing with the emotions of this match today," said Auburn head coach Tim Gray. "It's not that she played great tennis today, it's that she played smart tennis. She stayed focused and stuck to her game plan. My hat goes off to (Amanda) Fink of USC, she played a great match as well."
Chifchieva, a seeded 9-16 competitor, defeated the number six seed Fink of Southern California. Chifchieva won the first set 7-6 (2), but dropped the second 6-3. However, she came back and handily defeated Fink 6-0 in the final set.
Saturday's victory is Chifchieva's second over a higher seeded opponent in the tournament.
On Sunday she will face Amanda McDowell of Georgia Tech at 1:30 p.m., in the semifinal match. Chifchieva faced off to McDowell in her first match of this season and fell 6-4, 6-1; one of only two losses this season.
McDowell is ranked as the No. 7 singles player by the ITA. Chifchieva is No. 14.
