COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Senior Alex Haney (18-3, 9-1 SEC) defeated USC's Maria Sanchez (24-10, 2-2 PAC-10) in round one of 2009 NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament in a 10:30 a.m CST matchup. Haney took the match in two sets, winning 6-3 and 6-4.
The 2009 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles/Doubles Championships are held May 20-25 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M University. Singles play commenced on Wednesday while first-round doubles action kicks off on Thursday morning. Finals for both singles and doubles are set for Monday, May 25.
Haney, ranked 28th in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, defeated No. 23 Sanchez who split duties for the Trojans in both the No. 1 and 2 spots over the regular season. The win placed Haney in a second-round matchup with Stanford's Hilary Barte (22-1, the 2009 PAC-10 Player-of-the-Year.
Barte, listed as the No. 7 seed of the championship, moved on to second-round play following a three-set win (4-6,6-2, 6-2) over Baylor's Lenka Broosova (31-6, 9-12 BIG-12).
Auburn junior Fani Chifchieva (14-7, 7-3 SEC) was upset by Arizona freshman Natasha Marks (19-10) in a two-sets, 6-4 and 6-4. Chifchieva entered Wednesday's opening round as the No. 5 seed, with all regular season competition coming in the No. 1 spot for the Tigers.
The 12th-ranked team of Haney and senior Whitney Chappell will represent the Tigers in Thursday's opening-round of doubles action, squaring off against seventh-ranked Mari Andersson and Jana Juricova of Cal. Haney and Chappel earned a 10-3, 6-3 SEC record, while Andersson and Juricova 17-3 with a 6-1 PAC-10 record.
