COLUMBIA, S.C. - No. 44 Auburn women’s tennis battled through the rain and a long delay as the Tigers rallied to knock off No. 67 Tennessee, 4-3, to open the SEC Tournament on Wednesday at the Carolina Tennis Center.
The Tigers (16-12) began their match outdoors, battling through a two-hour rain delay to take the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead over the Lady Vols (11-15) with wins on courts two and three.
“I am very proud of our resiliency today, because of the multiple rain delays it was a very long day and the girls did a great job of adjusting to different settings and multiple delays,” head coach Lauren Longbotham Meisner said. “We had great energy in doubles, really executing our points at the net. Pleun [Burgmans] fought back from a set down to win her match against a great player. She is really playing a high level of tennis right now. Jen and Paula played phenomenal tennis to close out the match.”
Reka Muller and Jen Pfeifler cruised to an 8-2 win on court three over Victoria Olivarez and Tiffany Tavares. Paula de Man and Michala Kucharova clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win against Tennessee’s Eve Repic and Laurence Guevremont on court two.
After doubles play concluded, the Tigers had to wait nearly four hours to resume their contest with the Lady Vols as the match moved indoors. With just four indoor courts at the Carolina Tennis Center, Auburn and Tennessee had to wait the outcome of the Arkansas-Missouri match before returning to play.
In singles, 66th-ranked Pleun Burgmans gave Auburn a win at the No. 1 line, defeating No. 86 Joanna Henderson, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 to tie the match at 2-2. After Tennessee retook the lead at 3-2, Auburn picked up wins from its bottom of the lineup to earn the victory.
Pfeifler tied the match at 3-all with a dominating 6-2, 6-0 on court six over the Lady Vol’s Ashlee Boles. de Man providing the match-clinching win at the No. 5 line, earning her 11th dual-match win of the year by defeating Tiffany Tavares.
Wednesday’s win marked Auburn’s first victory over Tennessee in the SEC Tournament since 1992.
Auburn will take on fifth-seed Alabama on Thursday at the Carolina Tennis Center. Match time is set for 8 a.m. CT and live results will be available on AuburnTigers.com.
