AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn women's tennis team won the doubles point and sealed the match with three consecutive wins to begin singles play, as the Tigers moved to 8-0 all-time against Samford with a 5-12 victory over the Bulldogs on Thursday at the Luther Young Tennis Complex.
"It was good to come out today and get a win," head coach Tim Gray said. "Samford has had a good year. We had to come out and take care of business. It was a good moral booster for us."
After the Tigers (6-16, 0-10 Southeastern Conference) won their fourth point to clinch the match, as Ashley Cowart defeated Samford's Whitnie Warren, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 4 match, the Tigers won two of the final three singles matches. With Auburn already having won the match with a 4-0 lead, Samford's Emily White got the Bulldogs (12-6, 8-2 Ohio Valley Conference) on the board with a win in the No. 3 match, as the Tigers' Irina Pljusznyin retired due to injury. White took the match 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 win by retirement.
Joining Cowart with singles victories for the Tigers were Alex Haney in the No. 1 match, Whitney Chappell in the No. 2 match and Dzeljan Memisi in the No. 5 match. Haney won her third straight singles match and earned her eighth win in her last 10 matches with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Samford's Anna Jackson in the No. 1 match. In the No. 2 match, Chappell earned her second consecutive victory with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Katie McMiller of Samford. Memisi topped Samford's Sarah McKey, 6-4, 6-2.
In the No. 6 match, Erin Gray was able to take the first match from Samford's Bethany Benson. After winning the first set, Gray was unable to hold on for the win, as Benson won the match in a three-set tiebreaker, 1-6, 7-6, 11-9.
In doubles play, the Tigers were able to win the doubles point by taking the first two completed matches. The doubles point was the first by the Tigers since March 17 versus Georgia State. The third doubles match was suspended after the Tigers clinched the doubles point.
In the No. 1 match, Ashley Cowart and Alex Haney paired together for the Tigers to take an 8-3 win over Sarah McKey and Emily White. In the No. 2 match Whitney Chappell and Irina Pljusznyin moved their record to 2-0 with an 8-3 victory over Anna Jackson and Katie McMiller. After the Tigers took the first two matches to take the point, the No. 3 match between the Tigers' tandem of Dzeljan Memisi and Erin Gray and Samford's duo of Christie Baker and Whitnie Warren was suspended.
Auburn returns to the courts on Saturday, when the Tigers host Alabama at 3 p.m. on Senior Day.
