STARKVILLE, Miss. - No. 42 Auburn women’s tennis fell short in its comeback effort at No. 44 Mississippi State, falling 4-3 in a marathon match at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre on Wednesday.

The Tigers (12-10, 2-8 SEC) battled back from a 3-1 deficit against Mississippi State (14-7, 4-6 SEC) and nearly completed the comeback bid with singles wins from the bottom of their lineup to tie the match at 3-3. Paula de Man dropped the opening set but pushed her singles match on court five to three sets before falling in a tiebreaker to decide the match.

Auburn opened the match by taking the doubles point from Mississippi State. The nation’s 10th-ranked pair of Pleun Burgmans and Emily Flickinger posted a 8-6 win on court one over Mississippi State’s Martina Frantova and Georgiana Patasc. Reka Muller and Jen Pfeifler came through on court three with an 8-6 victory to clinch the point for the Tigers.

In singles, the Tigers dropped matches on courts one, two and three to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 advantage with three matches left on court. Muller rallied back to knock of Frantova with a 4-6, 7-6 (1), 6-1 win on court four. Pfeifler tied the match at 3-3 by topping the Bulldogs’ Timea Guibe 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 6 line.

In the final match left on court, de Man dropped a tight first set and then took the second, 6-2, on court five against Mississippi State’ s Jennifer Brown. de Man and Brown battled back and forth throughout the final set, eventually extending the set to a match-deciding tiebreaker where Brown held off de Man to win 7-5, 6-2, 7-6 (4).

The match between Auburn and Mississippi State was originally scheduled for March 13 in Starkville, but heavy rain in the area forced the match to be postponed to Wednesday.

Auburn travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for its final road match of SEC play, taking on Alabama at 1 p.m. at the Alabama Tennis Center. Live stats for the match will be available on
