AUBURN - Auburn (4-11) picked up a 6-1 victory over in-state rival Troy in the second match of Saturday's doubleheader. The Tigers earned a 4-3 win over Boston University earlier in the day.
"We knew this was going to be a tough match. Troy always fights hard and (Troy Head Coach) Eric Hayes always does a good job of getting his team motivated," said Auburn head coach Tim Gray. "I am proud of the way the girls stepped up and fought. We fought through some adversity and it was not a pretty match, but they got it done. We just have to build on this and keep it going."
In doubles, Auburn took the point with two wins. On court two Plamena Kurteva and Jacquline Kasler defeated Troy's Luybov Dorofeeva and Gabriella Veiga, 8-2. On court three, the Trojans' Olfa Dhaoui and Rosaura Ramirez-Vega fell to Auburn's Caroline Thornton and Taylor Schreimann, 8-6, clinching the doubles point for the Tigers.
In the No. 1 match up the Tigers' Olivia Bennett and Pailina Schippers lost to Troy's Karoline Grymel and Leonie Guijt, 8-7 (7-5).
In singles play, the Tigers continued to play well, winning five of six matches to take the win. On court five Kasler defeated Troy's Ramirez-Vega, 6-2, 6-1. On court four Kurteva defeated Troy's Dorofeeva, 6-4, 6-3.
In the No. 2 match up, Auburn's Thronton beat the Trojans Dahoui, 6 4, 7-6 (8-6), to clinch the match for the Tigers.
In the No. 1 matchup Schippers lost to Troy's Grumel, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. On court five Auburn's Bennett took out the Trojan's Guijt, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. To finish off, Veiga fell to Auburn's Schreimann, 7-5, 6-4.
Auburn will have a home and a road match next week. The Tigers will face Vanderbilt in Auburn on Friday before traveling to Kentucky on Sunday. All home matches are played at the Yarbrough Tennis Center, admission is free. Live stats for all matches can be followed at AuburnTigers.com
