Ole Miss Pushes Past Tigers, 5-2

March 12, 2006

AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn women's tennis team earned two victories in singles an one in doubles, but it was not enough as No. 3 Ole Miss claimed a 5-2 win over the Tigers on Sunday at the Luther Young Tennis Complex.

Ole Miss (7-3, 1-3 SEC) was able to take the doubles point and won the first three singles matches of the day to secure the victory after building an insurmountable lead of 4-0 in the match.

Auburn (4-8, 0-4 SEC) dropped the first doubles match in the No. 2 position before Alex Haney and Ashley Cowart were able to even doubles play with an 8-4 win in the No. 1 match. With the doubles point on the line, Ole Miss was able to secure the first point of the match with an 8-6 win by the Lady Rebels' tandem of Mimi Renaudin and Preethi Subramanian over Leigh Tippins and Irina Pljusznyin.

"It was another tough SEC opponent and another opportunity," head coach Tim Gray said. "We had a lot of chances. I think the No. 3 doubles match was very pivotal, if we won that, I think the momentum may have been a little different heading into singles. We gave ourselves opportunities and that is what we have focused on since the beginning of the fall. When we create the opportunity, we are just not executing like we need to right now. I think it is coming and we just want to keep making improvements."

With Ole Miss having wrapped up the match, Auburn got on the board for the first time of the match in the No. 1 singles match between Whitney Chappell and Ole Miss' Virginia Tomatis. Chappell won her second straight match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory to move to 7-7 on the year and 6-5 in the spring. Auburn's second point of the match came from Irina Pljusznyin, who won her No. 6 match over the Lady Rebels' Mimi Renaudin, 6-4, 7-5.

In the No. 2 singles match, Alex Haney lost a back-and-forth match to Ole Miss' Nika Koukhartchouk, 7-6 (7-2), 7-5. In the No. 3 singles match, Ashley Cowart had her two-match win streak snapped by Ole Miss' Ilona Somers, 6-2, 6-0. In the No. 4 singles match, Tori Almagno fell to No. 85 Ksenia Tokarieva of Ole Miss, 6-1, 6-0. At the No. 5 position, Leigh Tippins dropped her match to the Lady Rebels' Preethi Subramanian, 6-4, 6-3.

In doubles play, Ole Miss took the doubles point by picking up victories in the Nos. 2 and 3 matches. In the No. 1 match, Alex Haney and Ashley Cowart built an early 4-1 lead and held on for an 8-4 victory over Ole Miss' team of Virginia Tomatis and Ilona Somers.

In the No. 2 doubles match Whitney Chappell and Tori Almagno fell to the Lady Rebels' tandem of Nika Koukhartchouk and Kseniia Tokarieva. At the No. 3 position, Leigh Tippins and Irina Pljusznyin dropped their match to Ole Miss' Mimi Renaudin and Preethi Subramanian, 8-6.

Auburn returns to the courts on Thursday, March 16, when the Tigers host Louisville at 2 p.m.
