The No. 62 Auburn women's tennis team defeated Ole Miss, 6-1 at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center in Oxford, Miss. With the win, the Tigers improve to 7-4 on the year, while Ole Miss falls to 4-9.
Auburn has now won two SEC matches in a row.
"It was another great performance today," head coach Tim Gray said. "Coming out this weekend 2-0 will be a huge momentum builder for the rest of the season."
The Tigers began the match by winning the doubles point. Melissa Koning and Alex Haney defeated Ilona Somers and Kseniia Tokarieva, 8-6 at the No. 1 spot. At No. 2, Fani Chifchieva and Whitney Chappell took down Carlin Cochran and Preethi Subramanian, 8-2. Jil Hastenrath and Kelly Adams dropped the No. 3 match, 8-4 to Nika Koukhartchouk and Soledad Podlipnik.
Auburn continued to dominate in singles, taking five out of six matches. Starting at the No. 1 position, #39 Chifchieva fought past Somers, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Koning took her No. 2 match, 7-6, 6-1 over Tokarieva, while Haney defeated Koukhartchouk in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Chappell dropped the No. 4 match 2-6, 2-6 to Podlipnik and Hastenrath pushed past Subramanian, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot. The Tigers finished off the Rebels as Adams defeated Cochran 6-2, 4-6, 1-0(3).
