Auburn, Ala. - The No. 40 Auburn women's tennis team (11-3, 3-1 SEC) extended their conference record with a 5-2 win over Mississippi State (5-5, 0-4 SEC) at the Yarbrough Tennis Center Sunday.

"The team put forth a very good effort today," said Auburn head coach Tim Gray. "These are the types of matches where we have to put our best-foot forward and prove that we are ready to play with anybody. We still have some things to work on, but I am pleased with where we are right now and I like where we are headed."

Alex Haney easily won Auburn's first singles match, giving up only one game to MSU opponent Renee Joseph. Freshman Gaby Beelen claimed Auburn's second singles point, allowing only two games to DeAndra Saddler.

Sophomore Melissa Koning clinched the match for the Tigers with a 6-3, 6-1, victory over Radka Ferankova in the No. 3 spot.

Fani Chifchieva, who was SEC Player of the week March 5, for the second time this season, defeated Martina Banikova in the No. 1 spot for Auburn's fifth point, extending her singles win-streak to 12. The No. 24 ranked singles player remains undefeated in the SEC (4-0).

Freshman Dunja Djuranovic dropped a hard-fought match on court six, 6-2, 6-2 to Valeriya Makarycheva. Jil Hastenrath fought for nearly two hours in the four spot, but fell 6-4, 6-4 to Elna de Villiers.

Auburn won the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Haney and Koning, ranked No. 47 by the ITA, claimed a key victory over No. 45 Banikov and de Villiers. Hastenrath and Beelen clinched the doubles point when they defeated Joseph and Ferancova 8-6, on court two.

Chifchieva and Djuranovic battled to a tie-breaker on court three, but fell 8-7 (5) to Makarycheva and Saddler.
