AUBURN, Ala. - No. 30 Auburn women's tennis took the doubles point, but saw its seven-match winning streak snapped as the Tigers fell 4-1 to No. 42 South Carolina on Friday in Columbia, S.C.
Auburn's (10-3, 0-1 SEC) Paula de Man and Michala Kucharova battled their way through a tiebreaker to earn the Tigers' first doubles win of the match at 8-7 (3) on court three. The victory moved the tandem to 7-1 in double this season.
The No. 8 pair of Pleun Burgmans and Emily Flickinger clinched the doubles point, topping South Carolina's (8-2, 1-0 SEC) Hadley Berg and Elixane Lechemia, 8-4, on court one. The victory marked the 87th doubles win in Flickinger's career, tying the senior for the most in school history with former Tiger Alex Haney.
In singles, Auburn forced three matches to go the distance but could not come up with a victory. No. 55 Burgmans fell 6-3, 6-1 to the Gamecocks' No. 121 Lechemia to tie the match at 1-1 in the only straight-set match of the night. South Carolina grabbed the lead at 2-1 when No. 124 Caroline Dailey defeated Andie Dikosavljevic 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 on court two.
Flickinger fell in three sets to Bridget Folland 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 at the No. 3 line. The Gamecocks clinched the match on court four as Megan Blevins defeated Muller 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-3.
Paula de Man was leading 6-4, 1-4 on court five, while Pfeifler trailed 2-1 at the No. 6 line when play was suspended.
