AU Captures Seventh and Eighth Shut-outs of Season

Auburn, Ala. - The Auburn women's tennis team (8-2, 0-0 SEC) captured two shut-out victories over Jacksonville State and Southern Mississippi in a double-header at the Yarbrough Tennis Facility Saturday, Feb. 23.

"Today was a good day," said Auburn head coach Tim Gray. "These were a nice couple of wins for us."

Auburn started the day with a 7-0 victory over Jacksonville State, the Tigers' seventh shut-out of the season. The Tigers gave up only three sets in doubles action.

Fani Chifchieva and Alex Haney paired to win 8-0 on court one. Gaby Beelen and Melissa Koning won 8-1 in the two spot. Whitney Chappell and Dunja Djuranovic won 8-2 in the three spot.

Auburn swept singles, with only one out of six players giving up more than three sets. Chifchieva, Haney, Koning, Chappell and Beelen all gave up three sets or less. Heather Bybee battled on court six, but came out on top with a 7-5 (4), 6-2 victory.

In Auburn's second match against the Eagles, the Tigers again swept doubles. Chifchieva and Haney paired again to win 8-2 in the one spot. Bellen and Chappell paired in the two spot to win 8-3. Beelen and Koning put together a win 8-4, in the three spot.

In singles, Koning finished first with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the three spot. Chifchieva followed with a win 6-0, 6-1 in the one spot, her eighth consecutive victory. Haney won 6-1, 6-0, in the two spot. Chappell followed with a 6-1, 6-2, victory in the four spot. Jil Hastenrath won her seventh-consecutive match on court five 6-2, 6-0. Gaby Beelen won Auburn's final match 6-3, 6-3.



"I am pleased with our focus and I think we are ready for SEC play," Gray said. "It is going to be tough but we are ready to go."

The Tigers will be back in action on the road to open up SEC play on Feb. 29. Auburn will face Arkansas in Fayetteville. The Tigers will turn around on Sunday, Feb. 2, to face LSU in Baton Rouge, La.
