"I thought we did a good job the entire weekend," head women's tennis coach Tim Gray said. "I am really happy this early into the season with our focus and the effort that the girls gave. I think this is definitely a good start to the season. We did a lot of things well; our fitness showed and we looked very fresh in our matches."
In doubles action, the Tigers won two of three flights. Fani Chifchieva and Melissa Koning easily handled Martina Nitkova and Katerina Gresova, picking up an 8-2 Orange Flight victory. The senior duo of Alex Haney and Whitney Chappell recorded a Blue Flight 8-6 win over Kiara Powell and Dariana Kozmina. Auburn newcomers Myrthe Molenveld and Daniella Vukadinovic suffered an 8-6 setback at the hands of Diana Nakic and Linda Hricistova in the Tiger Flight.
Moving into singles action, the nation's 86th ranked singles player, Auburn's Alex Haney dominated Georgia State's Martina Nitkova, winning big, 6-2, 6-0, and sixth-ranked Fani Chifchieva registered a 6-2, 6-2 win over Diana Nakic. Both matches were in the Orange Flight.
Auburn's Melissa Koning, ranked 41st nationally, rallied from a first set loss to defeat Dariana Kozmina 6-7, 7-5, 6-0, in the Blue Flight and Auburn's Myrthe Molenveld topped Martina Ondrackova 7-6, 6-0, in the same flight.
Auburn will open its 2009 dual season on the road against No. 8 Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Ga., at 2 p.m. CT.
