AUBURN - The No. 27 Auburn women's tennis team kicked off the spring season on Friday against UAB in the first day of action at the Auburn Winter Invitational at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. The women competed against UAB in the afternoon flights starting with doubles and wrapped up with singles competition.
The final doubles match for the day, in the Tiger Flight, was taken by Jil Hasternath and Auburn newcomer, Myrthe Molenveld. The pair won the match, 8-3, over Ceylan Engin and Linda Hricistova. Hricistova, a freshman of Georgia State, paired up with Engin in doubles competition as a fill-in for the Blazers.
"We did a good job in doubles," head women's tennis coach Tim Gray said. "Everybody was a little nervous at the onset, but they worked through it and we took care of business. Everybody had great energy."
In singles competition, it was sixth-ranked All-American Chifchieva opening with a win. Facing Jenny Cape in the Orange Flight, Chifchieva was victorious, 6-1, 6-2.
No. 86 Haney won her match against Giorgia Romeo, 6-1, 6-4, in another Orange Flight match. Koning, ranked 41st nationally, defeated Brittany DeFelice, 6-0, 6-1, in the Blue Flight.
In the other Blue Flight match, Molenveld faced Jenny Cape and earned the victory, 6-0, 6-1. The final singles matches of the night took place in the Tiger Flight with Whitney Chappell defeating Ceylan Engin, 6-2, 6-0, and Jil Hasternath beat Linda Hricistova, 7-5, 6-3 in the final match of the night. Hricistova competed for Georgia State in singles competition.
"We did a great job," Gray stated. "In the first matches of the year, everyone is going to be a little nervous, but we worked through it and did a nice job in every flight."
The Auburn Winter Invitational will continue Saturday with UAB facing Georgia State at 10 a.m. and Auburn taking on Southern Mississippi at 2:30 p.m. at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
