The Auburn softball team signed four players for the 2013 class, receiving letter of intent from Jenna Abbott, Kasey Cooper, Courtney Huston and Ashley Leon to begin competition in spring of 2014.
A native of Dothan, Ala., Kasey Cooper was the Alabama 6A Player of the Year as a junior at Dothan High School in 2012. Cooper pitched and played shortstop, hitting .595 with 19 home runs, 31 doubles, 58 RBI and a .658 on-base percentage.
In the circle, Cooper posted a 27-11 record with a 0.98 ERA with 339 strikeouts in 228.1 innings pitched. Cooper helped lead Dothan to a third-place finish in the state playoffs and was named the Wiregrass Player of the Year.
“I am very excited about Kasey Cooper’s signing with us,” Auburn head coach Tina Deese said. “I have watched her for the last few years and she is a player that is constantly improving her game. She is the definition of a student-athlete and I foresee Kasey impacting the program on the field, in the classroom and in the community. Kasey will make an immediate impact for us offensively, with her power from the left side, and in the circle as well.”
Cooper has posted a 4.35 GPA with more than 100 hours of community service.
Ashley Leon will join the Tigers after spending her high school career at Gulliver Preparatory in Miami, Fla. Leon earned all-state honors and was named the Miami-Herald Offensive Player of the Year in 2012.
Leon has helped lead Gulliver Prep to three consecutive state championships while posting a .447 batting average, 87 runs scored and 96 stolen bases for her career. Leon was tabbed the seventh best prospect in the state of Florida by MaxPrep and the No. 20 prospect nationally.
“Ashley Leon is going to be an exciting athlete is the SEC,” Deese said. “She is the best defensive athlete I have ever seen at her age. Ashley is a game-changer with her defense and she will make an immediate impact on our team.”
A native of Dawsonville, Ga., Jenna Abbott is a two-time first team all-state selection at Dawson County High School. Abbott hit .611 with nine home runs and a .728 on-base percentage last season.
“Jenna Abbott is a lefty pitcher with velocity and spin,” Deese said. “She also brings a powerful stick to the left side of the plate.”
Courtney Huston comes to Auburn from Portland, Ore. Huston attends Lincoln High School where she earned 2012 district player of the year and conference pitcher of the year honors.
“Courtney has a great combination of velocity and spin from the rubber,” Deese noted. “She has played a very competitive West Coast schedule for the last three years and she has improved every year.”
The Auburn softball team opens the 2013 season by hosting the Plainsman Invitational Feb. 8-10.
