Dean, Team USA Claim Tournament Title
October 31, 2004
PLANT CITY, Fla. -- Auburn softball senior Sara Dean went 0-for-3 Sunday against Chinese Taipei, but her overall performance helped push Team USA to the gold medal of the 1st World University Softball Championship.
Team USA defeated Chinese Taipei, 1-0, for the second time in as many days to win the tournament's title. Team USA scored its lone run of the game in the sixth and rode an Alicia Hollowell pitching performance * one that saw just one hit allowed and seven strikeouts * to victory.
Dean, meanwhile, provided the offensive spark for most of the tournament. She was second on the team in batting average, hitting .375 in nine games (9-for-24) and led Team USA with nine runs batted in. She also had a team-leading slugging percentage of .667 and on-base percentage of .464.
Dean, a Valencia, Calif., had three doubles and two triples over the six-day tournament, and managed to get on base via a walk four times. Normally a catcher with Auburn, Dean played right field for Team USA, handling three fielding opportunities safely. She finished the tournament with two putouts and an assist.
