Final Fall Doubleheader On Deck For Auburn Softball Against Gulf Coast State College

Oct. 22, 2013

AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn University softball team will conclude its fall schedule tomorrow with two games against Gulf Coast State College starting at 3 p.m. at Jane B. Moore Field. The Tigers are currently 6-0 on the 2013 fall season and will look to finish with two more wins for a perfect 8-0 record heading into the spring.

Auburn is coming off two shutout wins over Northwest Florida State College last Saturday by scores of 4-0 and 15-0. With the 15-run win in game two, Auburn has scored at least 10 runs in four of its six fall games so far. The two shutouts are also the team's first of the Clint Myers era.

In game one, the Tigers took an early lead in the second inning when freshman Ashley Leon tripled down the third-base line, bringing home junior Branndi Melero. The Orange and Blue scored again in the second inning on freshman Kasey Cooper's RBI single.

The Tigers finished game one with nine hits and the pitching staff allowed only one Raider hit in the seventh inning. Starting pitcher sophomore Marcy Harper pitched six hitless innings with six strikeouts and six walks. Sophomore Emily Carosone led the Tigers with two hits.

In game two, the Tigers took a first inning 3-0 lead with Melero's two RBI double and an RBI single by junior McKenzie Kilpatrick. The Tigers put on a hitting clinic with 15 runs scored on 16 hits. The final run scored in the game came on a solo homerun by freshman Anna Gibbs in the sixth inning, her first of the fall season.

Starting pitcher Lexi Davis picked up the win in her third appearance of the fall, going five shutout innings with seven strikeouts and two walks. Davis gave up only two hits to the Raiders, completing a great pitching day for AU.

Fans wishing to come to tomorrow's games can also help the team in their latest community outreach project, Project Underpants. Auburn University softball has teamed up with the Auburn Student Nursing Association on Project Underpants, a program designed to help underprivileged kids get clean underwear.

The project was developed when nursing students, who were working at a daycare serving low socioeconomic families, discovered that children did not have clean underwear or underwear to change in to. They quickly decided that a staple such as underwear for potty-training children should not be a luxury and took it upon themselves to start up a drive to collect underwear for these kids.

Fans wishing to help can bring new underwear for boys and girls ages 3-5 years old (about sizes 3-8). T-shirts will also be sold for $15, and the money collected will be used to buy more underwear to supplement what we collect. The softball team will have bins located around the Softball Complex to place donations, and a representative of the project will be at tomorrow's games.

First pitch for game one of tomorrow's doubleheader against GCSC is set for 3 p.m. at Jane B. Moore Field. Game two is slated to start roughly 25 minutes after the conclusion of game one.

A full game recap with stats will be available on following game two.
