AUBURN, Ala. -
Hosting NCAA National Champion Michigan and a trip to the NFCA Leadoff Classic highlight the 2006 Auburn softball schedule, which head coach Tina Deese announced on Wednesday.
Michigan, which won the Women's College World Series in June after taking 2-of-3 from UCLA, visits Jane B. Moore Field on Feb. 28. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. CDT., and marks just the second time in program history the Tigers will play a defending national champion -- the first came in 2002 at Arizona.
The visit by the Wolverines will come just two days after the Tigers conclude a trip to the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga. Held at the South Commons Complex in Columbus from Feb. 24-26, the Classic, one of the premier tournaments in the nation, will feature 24 teams, including Michigan, Florida State, Iowa, Michigan State and fellow Southeastern Conference clubs Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. The schedule for the classic will be released at a later date.
Auburn will host two tournaments this season. The first, the Tiger Invitational, will take place from Feb. 10-12 and opens Auburn's season. Scheduled teams at the tournament include Minnesota, Miami (Ohio), Centenary, North Carolina State and Evansville.
The War Eagle Classic is next on Auburn's slate, scheduled for Feb. 17-19 at Jane B. Moore Field. Middle Tennessee, Jacksonville State, Lipscomb, Mercer and Furman are set to play at the tournament.
Auburn also participates in a tournament on the campus of Florida Atlantic from March 4-5. Boston College, Florida Atlantic and Auburn are the scheduled teams for the two-day event. A schedule for the tournament will be released at a later date.
SEC play will see the Tigers host 2005 Women's College World Series participant Alabama, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Kentucky and Georgia. Kentucky visits Auburn on March 11-12 to open SEC play.
Georgia visits Jane B. Moore Field March 25-26, followed by Mississippi State April 14-15 and Alabama April 25-27. Ole Miss closes Auburn's regular season by visiting Jane B. Moore Field May 6-7.
Auburn's first SEC road game comes against Tennessee in Knoxville on March 18-19. Trips to Florida (March 29-30), LSU (April 8-9), Arkansas (April 22-23) and South Carolina (April 29-30) are also scheduled.
Non-conference opponents this season include games at Georgia State (Feb. 14), UAB (Feb. 21) and Florida State (March 30). In addition to Michigan, non-conference tilts at Jane B. Moore Field include Samford (March 8) and Troy (March 14). Auburn and Southern Miss. will play a neutral-site game in Pensacola, Fla. on March 1.
The SEC Tournament is scheduled for May 11-14 in Athens, Ga., on the Georgia campus. NCAA Regional play begins May 19.
