AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn softball team opened fall team practice this week, its first fall practice under new head coach Clint Myers. The team has been going through individual workouts for the last few weeks, but had its first full team workout with the new coaching staff at Jane B. Moore Field on Monday in preparation for its first fall game on Oct. 10 against Wallace State.
“Practice was fun,” Myers said. “It was exciting. We were talking about it before we started that there was a great sense of excitement from the coaches, GA’s and especially the players. Everybody was ready for this to begin. They’ve heard so much about what we do and what we’re going to do. To actually have it happen, it was exciting, fun and educational.”
Auburn returns four players that were named All-SEC last season, including junior Braandi Melero, who was named All-SEC Second Team after hitting .301 with 14 RBI in league play. Morgan Estell was selected to the SEC All-Defensive Team at first base after not committing an error with six assists and Emily Carosone and Tiffany Howard were selected to the SEC All-Freshman Team. Carosone hit a team-best .386 in league play last season, while Howard hit .310 against SEC foes.
“We’ve been doing individuals this whole time,” Carosone said. “It’s nice to be able to get everyone together, to get in positions, put runners on and work on real situations. We’ve been in the cage working on one-on-one stuff, so it’s nice to be on the field and get the whole aspect of everything.”
The Tigers will have almost a full month of practice under their belts before facing their first fall ball opponent, Wallace State Community College, on Thursday, Oct. 10. The Tigers and Governors will play a double-header that day with start times at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Auburn will then play three more double-headers throughout the month against Southern Union on Thursday, Oct. 17, Northwest Florida State College on Saturday, Oct. 19 and finishing with Gulf Coast State College on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
All games will be played at Jane B. Moore Field and admission is free. All game times can be found online at AuburnTigers.com.
