AUBURN, Ala. - Leslie Klein's sixth inning double scored two and broke open a 1-1 tie as second-seeded LSU advanced to the SEC Tournament Championship game with a 4-1 victory over No. 3 Alabama in the second round Friday at Jane B. Moore Field.
Klein doubled into the right center gap, bringing in Jazz Jackson from second and Rachel Mitchell from first, giving LSU a 3-1 lead. The Tigers (51-10 overall) extended the lead to 4-1 later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Killian Roessner.
Mitchell opened the game with a solo home run in the fourth inning. It was her eighth of the season.
Alabama (51-7) answered back in the top half of the fifth with its first run of the game. Kelley Montalvo hit a sacrifice fly to center field with the bases loaded and one out, allowing Mallory Benak to come in from third.
Alabama rallied and threatened in the seventh. The Crimson Tide loaded the bases, but LSU starter Emily Turner was able to get out of the jam with a popout and a strikeout.
Blair Potter dropped to 16-2 this season after scattering six hits and four runs over six innings. The Alabama starter struck out six in her 29th appearance of the season.
Turner threw her 17th complete game of the season to improve to 19-6 this season. She scattered six hits while striking out seven.
The victory advanced LSU to its eighth SEC Tournament Championship Game in nine years. The Tigers are 4-3 in their seven previous championship games.
The game was the 49th meeting between the clubs, the most between any two Southeastern Conference schools. LSU holds the all-time lead, 29-20.
