The Auburn softball team will make the program's sixth appearance in NCAA postseason play when the third-seeded Tigers take on second-seeded Iowa in the first round of the Atlanta, Ga., Regional host by Georgia Tech.
The Tigers (29-27) take on the Hawkeyes (42-14) on Friday, May 15. Game time is 4 p.m. CT. The Atlanta Regional will also feature top seeded Georgia Tech (41-13) vs. Boston University (41-16) in the other first-round game.
It marks the second consecutive season the Tigers have earned a trip to NCAA Regional play and the fifth time in the last six seasons.
"I am very excited about earning another trip to NCAA's," Auburn head coach Tina Deese said. "Our team has worked hard to get here. Now, we have to work a little harder to get ready for a very good Iowa team. They have had an excellent season and this is going to be a tough challenge for our team."
Auburn is 1-2 against Iowa all-time with the last meeting coming in 2005. The Tigers are 4-4 all-time against Georgia Tech and have never faced Boston University.
Auburn is 4-10 all-time in NCAA Regional play. The Tigers have been the No. 2 seed in four of the five previous regional appearances. Auburn was the fourth-seed in its first-ever regional, the 2002 Tallahassee (Fla.) Regional. The Tigers went 0-2 that year, losing to host Florida State, 2-1, and Florida Atlantic, 4-2.
The Tigers second regional appearance came in 2004, as the No. 2 seed, in the Stanford (Calif.) Regional. Auburn lost to Hofstra, 1-0, in the first round and Fresno State, 3-1, in the elimination round. The Tigers hosted the program's first regional in 2005 and served as the second seed. Auburn lost to Florida State, 5-0, in the first round before defeating Florida A&M, 11-2, in the second round. The Tigers were eliminated in a 2-0 loss to Florida State.
Auburn's third straight NCAA appearance came as the second seed in the 2006 Tucson (Ariz.) Regional. The Tigers lost to Ohio State, 1-0 in the first round and then defeated Marist, 14-0, in the second round. Auburn followed that by winning a rematch with Ohio State, 4-0, before finally being eliminated by Arizona, 4-2.
In 2008, the second-seeded Tigers lost its opening round game to Louisiana Tech, 1-0 in 12 innings, in the College Station (Texas) Regional. Auburn followed that with a 2-0 win over Stephen F. Austin before losing to Louisiana Tech 2-1 in an elimination game.
Of Auburn's 14 prior NCAA Regional games, five have been decided by one run including two of the Tigers' three games in 2008.
