Auburn Softball Completes Three-Game Sweep Of Ole Miss
March 23, 2003
OXFORD, MS— Auburn completed a three-game sweep of the Ole Miss Rebels with a 4-0 win Sunday in Oxford, Miss. Dating back to last season, it was the Tigers sixth straight shutout of Ole Miss. Kristen Keyes completed her second complete game of the series, upping her record for the season to 3-9. Keyes allowed four hits and one walk with her second consecutive game of 12 strikeouts, including the first six batters she faced.
The Tigers took the lead in the top of the second as Sara Dean led off the inning with a double to left field. She stole third and in an attempt to pick her off, Rebels catcher Phyllis Manley threw to second baseman Jordan Chitwood, whose relay to third was overthrown into the Ole Miss dugout, allowing Dean to come home. Two outs later, Martha Phillips hit her second home run of the season for a 2-0 advantage.
In the fifth, Ole Miss pitcher Lindsay Price opened the inning by hitting Jodie Van Ooyen. Phillips put down a bunt and Manley attempted to get Van Ooyen at second, but the throw was late and both were safe. The runners advanced on a fly out by Paige Jones, and after a foul out by Lindsey Chitwood, Ashley Griffin brought home her eighth and ninth RBI on her first collegiate triple giving the Tigers the final margin of 4-0. Griffin added a double in the seventh inning to finish the series with six extra base hits.
Auburn will next travel to Birmingham, Ala., for a single game versus Alabama-Birmingham at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26.
