Birmingham-area Tigers Taryn Gray and Kyndall White will lead the Auburn softball team into a 6:30 p.m. game against the Samford Bulldogs Wednesday at Bulldog Field.
Auburn enters the game with a 15-3 record, having just competed in the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga., this past weekend. The Tigers went 3-2 at the tournament, picking up wins over Georgia Tech, Charlotte and Syracuse.
Samford is 8-11 on the season and will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak.
The Tigers hold a 9-6 series advantage over Samford. The teams last played in 2006, with Auburn coming away with a 1-0 victory. Auburn has a 5-3 mark against the Bulldogs in Birmingham, but have lost the last three consecutive games played at Bulldog Field. Samford won 1-0 in Birmingham in 2003 in the last home meeting with the Tigers.
A Vestavia Hills, Ala., native, Gray leads the Tigers in hitting with a .365 average and is coming off a strong showing at the NFCA Leadoff Classic where she hit .400.
A freshman from Pinson, Ala., White has started every game for the Tigers at shortstop this season. White had scored 10 runs, swiped three bases and has two triples in helping the Tigers to a 15-3 record.
Auburn is currently fourth in the Southeastern Conference in team earned run average with a 1.25 mark. The Tigers' staff also ranks in the top four in opponent's batting average (4th, .170), strikeouts (3rd, 153) and fewest walks allowed (2nd, 33).
Freshman pitcher Lauren Schmalz leads the SEC in ERA at 0.00, having yet to allow a run in 21.0 innings of work. Senior Brittany Day is eighth in the league in opponent batting average at .160, while freshman Angel Bunner is tied for 10th at .167.
Sophomore Anna Thompson
is third in the conference in strikeouts with 75 and tied for eighth in the league with seven wins.
