Auburn freshman pitcher Anna Thompson has been named the Southeastern Conference's Softball Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Thompson went 2-0 at the Tiger Invitational Friday through Sunday, finishing with a 1.52 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 18 1/3 innings. She allowed 10 hits and walked just four in four appearances and was named to the Tiger Invitational All-Tournament Team.
The Huntsville native won her first career game Saturday against Tulsa. She went a full six innings against the Golden Hurricane and struck out 10 in Auburn's 9-1 victory. She followed that appearance Sunday by throwing 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief in the Tigers' 5-1 win over UAB. Thompson struck out five against the Blazers and hit two batters - the only way UAB reached base against the right-hander.
Thompson has made an impact early on, appearing in nine of the team's 12 games en route to a 2-3 record. She has struck out 65 batters in 38 1/3 innings, averaging nearly 1.7 per frame. Her earned run average of 1.64 leads the team, as does her .173 batting average against.
Thompson and the Tigers play again Friday at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga. Auburn opens against North Carolina and Michigan in the three-day tournament.
