Auburn Softball Opens Mardi Gras Tournament With Win, 3-2
February 14, 2003
MONROE, LA — Auburn opened the Mardi Gras tournament against the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions and earned a 3-2 win as Jodie Van Ooyen singled in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Tigers got on the board first in the bottom of the second. Martha Phillips led off the inning with a walk and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Anne Norton, but then Monroe-native Deni Zeigler gave her friends and family in attendance a reason to cheer with a two-run home run to center field for a 2-0 lead. It was Zeigler’s first home run of the season and the 13th of her career.
Freshman Janet Spivey started her fourth consecutive game for Auburn and held a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but in the sixth, Southeastern tied the game on the strength of two Auburn errors, a RBI double by Karin Smith and a RBI single by Raeni Landry. Spivey pitched 5.1 innings, surrendering two runs, one earned run, on three hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. Jenny Diaz relieved Spivey during the sixth inning and finished the game for her fourth win of the season, surrendering no runs on two hits and a walk with one strikeout.
With the score tied in the seventh, Shannon Anderson led off the inning with a walk and Ashley Griffin then doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third. Van Ooyen then singled up the middle for the win.
Auburn will play tomorrow versus Tulsa at 11 a.m. and Louisiana-Lafayette at 3 p.m. The Tigers will then be seeded by record and will play one more game on Saturday and another on Sunday with the possibility of second game later in the day.
