Auburn Softball Team Can't Hold Off Pacific
February 8, 2004
WACO, Texas – Pacific rallied to score two runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat Auburn, 2-1, on Sunday morning in the Getterman Classic at Baylor University.
Crystal Presson began the rally with a single down the left field line. Following a Boni Kading strikeout, Lizzie Hagan doubled down the left field line to give Pacific runners on second and third with one out.
Gina Carbonatto reached when shortstop Ashley Griffin’s throw to first was off the mark. Griffin was forced to rush the throw after looking Presson back to third. Presson scored after the throw got past first baseman Martha Phillips.
Michelle Anunciation was intentionally walked to load the bases and then Kristen Allen was hit by a pitch to score the game winning run.
Auburn finally got out of the inning as Ashlie D’Errico grounded into a double play.
Prior to the seventh, Kristen Keyes had been dominant in the circle for the Tigers. She allowed just three hits and struck out eight through six. She ended up giving up two runs – one earned – on five hits and striking out nine.
Auburn struck early in the first with a two-out rally. Sara Dean singled up the middle and then scored on Martha Phillips double to right field. The next batter, Holly Currie, looked to extend the lead when she crushed a ball over the foul pole in left field only to have it called foul.
The Tigers fell to 5-2 on the year and 3-2 on the weekend. Auburn will travel to Alabama State for a 1 p.m. contest Wednesday. Next weekend, the team will host the Tiger Invitational beginning on Friday morning.
