Auburn Softball Falls to Northwestern in Season Opener

Tampa, Fla.— In the first game of the 2003 season, Auburn fell to Northwestern 6-1 Friday morning in the opening game of the USF-Louisville Slugger Tournament in Tampa, Fla. It marked the first time in the program’s seven-year history that the Tigers lost a season opener.
Auburn fell behind in the top of the second inning as junior Kristen Keyes walked two batters who came around to score on back-to-back hits by Northwestern’s Ashley Crane and Brett Nakabayashi. The Wildcats then extended their lead in the seventh, scoring four runs on five hits, including two doubles into left center by Cindy Muran and Jamie Dotson.
Auburn got on the board in bottom of the seventh when freshman Ashley Griffin singled to center to score Deni Zeigler from third.
Keyes gave up a total of six runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts in the complete game loss, while Northwestern pitcher Lauren Schwendimann gave up one run on five hits with 11 strikeouts in the complete game win.
Auburn will play again at 7 p.m. against Florida Atlantic.
