BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Auburn softball team was picked to finish tenth in the Southeastern Conference’s Preseason Coaches’ poll Monday as announced by the league office.
Last season, Auburn finished sixth in the Western Division with a 7-17 conference record and 30-23 record overall. Now with the divisions combined a new coach Clint Myers at the helm, the Tigers will be looking to start fresh in 2014.
Youth is still a major part of this year’s softball team as 17 of Auburn’s 23 roster players are underclassmen. However, the Orange and Blue are returning their entire pitching staff and also boasts one of the best upperclassmen in the conference, outfielder Morgan Estell.
Last season, Estell finished third on the team in batting (.344) and was named to the SEC’s All-Defensive Team. She also currently has a .369 average for her career which is good for tops on Auburn’s all-time list if she can keep the pace.
Auburn will open the 2014 season by traveling to Troy, Ala., to face the Troy Trojans on Thursday, Feb. 6 with first pitch slated for 3 p.m. The team will then return home for its next 15 games starting with North Dakota State to open the Plainsman Invite at Jane B. Moore Field.
Points for the SEC Preseason Coaches’ poll were awarded on a 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12 basis and coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.
Florida was picked to win the conference with 10 first-place votes, followed by Tennessee (2), which currently holds the top spot in the opening 2014 NFCA/USA Today National Poll, and Alabama (1).
