AUBURN, Ala. -
The Auburn softball team is ranked 17th in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Preseason Top 25 Poll, the NFCA announced Wednesday. It comes a day after the Tigers earned a No. 20 ranking in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 Preseason Poll.
Auburn received 231 points in the NFCA Top 25, following No. 16 Northwestern. The No. 17 ranking marks the first time Auburn has been ranked in the poll to begin the season after receiving votes last season. The Tigers finished the 2005 season ranked 20th after going 50-18 and hosting their first ever NCAA Regional.
Michigan received 21 first-place votes and 714 points to earn the No. 1 spot in the 2006 preseason poll. The Wolverines, Feb. 28 visitors to Jane B. Moore Field and defending national champions, are also No. 1 in the USA Softball Top 25.
UCLA is ranked second in the NFCA Top 25 after earning eight first-place votes. Tennessee, Texas and Arizona round out the top five.
Other Southeastern Conference teams ranked in the top 25 include No. 6 Alabama, No. 10 Georgia and Florida, ranked 19th. LSU also received 80 points, narrowly missing the top 25, as did Mississippi State, which received eight points.
