Fullerton, Calif. -
Tatiana Fernandez hit a three-run home run and Anna Thompson struck out 14 as the Auburn softball team defeated host Cal State-Fullerton 6-1 in the last game of the DeMarini Invitational Sunday afternoon.
Auburn improved to 17-4 overall, while Fullerton fell to 5-10. The Tigers finished the tournament at 3-2.
"This was a really good win," Auburn head coach Tina Deese said. "It was good to see Tatiana get a big hit, and we made some really good plays defensively behind our pitcher."
Thompson improved to 10-2 with the victory. The Huntsville, Ala., native allowed one run, earned, on six hits in 7.0 innings of work with three walks. The 14 strikeouts marked the sixth double-digit strikeout performance for Thompson this season.
Krystal Heinle (3-4) took the loss after giving up six runs, five earned, on 10 hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Morgan Murphy gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Fernandez singled to open the inning and was lifted for pinch-runner Cassie Trosclair, who moved to second on a passed ball. Katie Colton moved Trosclair to third with a sac bunt and Murphy's sac fly to center brought her home for the first run of the game.
The Tigers increased their lead to 4-0 in the third inning. Lauren Guzman got things started with a one-out double to left. Guzman advanced to third on a single through the left side by Elizabeth Eisterhold with two outs. Fernandez then followed with a three-run home run to right, her first home run of the season and the 22nd of her career.
Through the first three innings, Thompson held the Titans in check allowing two hits, two walks and striking out seven. Twice, in the second and third innings, Fullerton put two runners on but Thompson was able to work out of each jam.
The Tigers extended their lead in the fourth inning. Amber Harrison singled with one out and moved to second on Taryn Gray's single. Myesha Finney followed with the third consecutive hit, with a single to right-center that plated Harrison and gave Auburn a 5-0 edge.
Guzman followed with a ground out to second that brought Gray home and pushed the Auburn lead to 6-0.
Fullerton got on the scoreboard with a one-out, solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. Torrie Anderson hit her third home run of the season over the fence in left-center to make it a 6-1 game.
Fullerton attempted to mount a rally in the bottom of the sixth after putting the first two batters on via a hit-by-pitch and a single. But Thompson got a pop out, strikeout and a ground out to second on the next three hitters to end the threat and preserve the five-run lead.
Thompson put the Titans down in order in the seventh to seal the victory.
