Holly Currie struck out eight and scattered three hits over six innings, but the Tigers could not manage a run against Virginia Tech starter Angela Tincher as the Auburn softball team fell to the Hokies, 1-0, Saturday at Jane B. Moore Field.
Auburn was scheduled to play against Tulsa in its second game Saturday at approximately 3 p.m. CT.
Currie threw 100 pitches and dropped to 3-4 this season. She allowed walked four and scattered three hits over six innings.
"Holly threw very well," Auburn head coach Tina Deese said. "Our offense just could not get a run. You have to give credit to Angela Tincher for throwing a good game."
Tincher picked up the win and improved to 4-0 this season. She threw all seven innings for the Hokies, striking out 15. She walked two.
Virginia Tech scored its only run of the game in the fourth. Jessica Everhart singled up the middle with the bases loaded, scoring Stephanie Savre from third.
Auburn threatened in the sixth. With one out, Taryn Gray reached on a Virginia Tech error, then, with Lauren Walton pinch running, moved to second when Holly Currie singled to the base of the wall in left field.
Sara Ghezzi, the next batter, struck out swinging but Tincher's pitch glanced off the catcher's glove, allowing the Auburn runners to move to second and third where they were stranded.
Currie picked up Auburn's only hit, while Virginia Tech's Kelsey Hoffman paced the Hokies with two hits.
Tiger Notes: The Tigers wore their orange uniforms and 1-2 in them this season ... The meeting marked the first between the Tigers and Hokies ... Holly Currie started her 88th career game, tying her with Kristen Keyes (2002-2004) for the most all-time in a Tiger uniform ... She has 116 appearances, which is second to Keyes' 125 ... Auburn dropped to 0-6 on the season in one-run games.
