Auburn Soccer To Host First Ever NCAA Tournament Rounds
Nov. 8, 2004
AUBURN - The No. 9-ranked Auburn Tiger soccer team (14-3-2) will be hosting its first-ever NCAA Tournament match Friday, Nov. 12 vs. Clemson in the first round of the tournament.
Auburn was awarded the host venue and will meet up with the Tigers of Clemson, while the other matchup at the AU Soccer Complex Friday night will feature Birmingham Southern and Washington.
"They made us wait until the final bracket was announced to find out, but after seeing that we are going to get to host, it was absolutely worth the wait," Auburn head coach Karen Hoppa said. "This first round matchup against Clemson is about as tough as it gets. They are in the ACC and have loads of talent. This will not be an
easy road for us."
Auburn successfully played through the SEC this season without a loss, which made the Tigers the only league team to do so. In their three consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament, Auburn has advanced to the second round twice.
Clemson, Auburn's first round opponent, was the host to AU in 2001 although the teams did not meet up. In the teams' four meetings, Clemson has won all four with the last meeting held in 1998.
"I can't tell you how excited we are," senior forward Sarah Steinmann said. "We are ready for this. This is a big challenge. Clemson is very talented, but we are excited for the opportunity to play them at home."
Other teams from the SEC that were awarded a spot in the tournament were Tennessee and Florida, who both earned a host site as well.
Game times are set for 5 and 7:30 p.m. on Friday night with Auburn and Clemson meeting at 7:30 p.m. Sunday's second round game will be held at 2 p.m. at the AU Soccer Complex. For more information, please call the AU Ticket Office at 1-800-AUB-1957.
