AUBURN, Ala. -
Rebecca Howell was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week and Amy Howard was named the SEC Freshman of the Week as the two helped guide Auburn to a pair of signature wins last week that secured a spot in next week's SEC Tournament.
Howell collected a pair of game-winning goals on the weekend as Auburn earned its' first-ever win over Tennessee in Knoxville and then knocked off No. 19 Georgia with a pair of unassisted goals. At Tennessee she scored the game-winner in the 55th minute as Auburn scored three second-half goals to erase a 1-0 halftime deficit and win going away, 3-1. She then capped off Auburn's senior day by scoring both goals in Auburn's 2-0 win over No. 19 Georgia, giving her three game-winning goals on the season. The win was Auburn's first over a ranked team since the 2007 season. Her career goals total now stands at 21, which is seventh all-time at Auburn, and her 63 points are also seventh.
"It is an honor to be chosen this week. This is as much a team award as an individual award because the team played great and you can't have an offense with just one person," Howell said.
This is the second time in Howell's career that she has been named the SEC Player of the Week, also earning the honor during the 2008 season.
Howell also has already been named to the TopDrawerSoccer Women's College Team of the Week and a CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Performer of the Week for her efforts against Tennessee and Georgia.
Howard made 11 saves over the weekend to help Auburn clinch its ninth consecutive trip to the SEC Tournament. Against Tennessee she made four saves on 18 Tennessee shots. She then made seven saves on 14 Georgia shots to earn her fourth shutout of the season. The SEC saves leader with 101, she has the seventh 100-save season in Auburn history and needs just two more saves to move into second on the single-season list.
"A lot of the credit for this has to go to our defense," Howard said. "Our defense played unbelievable. The only goal we gave up came on a set piece and not in the run of play."
This is the third time Howard has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week, also picking up the honor on Aug. 24 and Sept. 21. It marks the first time any Auburn player has been named either a Player of the Week or Freshman of the Week three times in a single season.
Auburn closes out its regular season on Friday at 7pm CT at Alabama. Currently sixth in the conference standings, Auburn can finish as high as fourth.
