AUBURN - Auburn clinched the SEC Western Division title here Sunday afternoon on Senior Day with a 2-0 win over LSU. The Tigers' Division title is their third in three years as they move to 12-2-3 overall and 5-1-2 in the SEC.
"I am happy that this game is behind us," head coach Karen Hoppa said. "Now we can focus on Alabama. The seniors had a great game and the rest of the team really played their hearts out for them. These seniors won the Western Division when they were sophomores and they haven't looked back."
Auburn didn't have to wait long to take the 1-0 advantage as just 1:48 into the contest, Chrissy Culver found the net. Senior Carly Thomas controlled the ball in the box and sent a short pass to Culver, who beat LSU goalkeeper Robyn DesOrmeaux from three yards out.
The Tigers added another goal at the 29:46 mark as redshirt freshman Jada Stewart scored her first goal of the season. The goal was set up by a Sarah Steinmann corner kick to the right side. The ball was cleared out by LSU, but Jac Schwarz sent the ball back into directly to Stewart, who also scored from three yards out.
The game was an aggressive one as LSU tallied 23 fouls and three yellow cards, while Auburn had 11 and one card. Auburn outshot LSU 12-to-3 and had five corner kicks to LSU's one.
Before the game, Auburn honored its five seniors including Sandy Carnes, Kellie Evans, Erin Hinson, Carly Thomas and Lindsey Wadkins.
"I can't believe it is over," Hinson said. "Before the game, the juniors, sophomores and freshmen gave us cards. It was really an emotional day, but it was good."
Auburn will finish up the regular season on the road at Tuscaloosa when the Tigers travel to Alabama for a 7 p.m. match up on Friday, Oct. 31. Auburn will learn of its seeding for the upcoming SEC Tournament following the game with the Crimson Tide.
