Auburn To Host 2004 SEC Soccer Tournament
October 9, 2004
AUBURN — Auburn University has been named as the replacement site for the 2004 SEC Women’s Soccer Tournament, Nov. 4, 5 and 7, as announced Friday by the Southeastern Conference office. The tournament was moved from Orange Beach, Ala., due to the extensive damage suffered from Hurricane Ivan.
“First and foremost, we would like to express our concern for the folks in Orange Beach,” Auburn head coach Karen Hoppa said. “We are looking forward to returning there in 2005 for the tournament. To receive the bid to host in the middle of the season like this is an incredible opportunity for our team and for our university and everyone here is excited to showcase SEC soccer in Auburn.”
The City of Orange Beach will continue to serve as the host for the 2005, 2006 and 2007 SEC Women’s Soccer Tournaments.
“We are excited that Auburn University agreed to host the 2004 SEC Women’s Soccer Tournament on such short notice,” said Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive. “With the popularity of women’s soccer continuing to grow, the tournament should be a great success.”
Auburn hosted the SEC Women’s Soccer Tournament once before in 1995. Kentucky defeated Alabama, 2-1, in the 1995 SEC Tournament Finals.
The winner of the three-day event receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Last season, Tennessee won the tournament and four SEC teams earned a NCAA Tournament bid.
2004 SEC Women’s Soccer Tournament ticket purchases can be made through the Auburn Ticket Office at 1-800-282-1957.
