Rivera and Walters Earn National Team of the Week Honors
Sept. 29, 2004
AUBURN — Auburn soccer players Megan Rivera and Jenn Walters were honored with National Teams of the Week awards for their efforts in helping the Tigers shutout South Carolina and No. 4 Florida last weekend.
Rivera, who shutout both teams for her third and fourth shutouts of the season, broke the Southeastern Conference career record for shutouts with 30 in her four seasons. The Miami, Fla., native was honored by the conference office as well as she was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week. Because of her outstanding performances on the weekend, she was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week.
Walters earns her second national team of the week honor as Soccer Buzz named the Clearwater, Fla., native to their Elite Team of the Week. In addition to leading the Auburn defense to two shutouts on the weekend, Walters scored the only goal of the game in the 1-0 win over Florida with a penalty kick. On the season, Walters, a second-year team captain, has scored two goals, both of which were on penalty kicks.
“Our seniors are the backbone of this team and we go as they go,” Hoppa said. “To have two of our seniors be named to a national team in the same week says a lot about the leadership we have this year.”
Auburn will travel to Vanderbilt Friday, Oct. 1 and Kentucky Sunday, Oct. 3 for the Tigers first conference road weekend of the year. You can listen to the games live on www.auburntigers.com or on the radio at 910 AM or 1400 AM WANI.
